Love this fond reminiscence of your dad, Annette, even if there were some machinations to get from a "lie" to the truth in your family. What else will we discover? ;) "Oh my achin' back!" Ha! That's a new one...
I am really enjoying this memoir! Great writing. I've just finished one myself and I can see where publishing it as installments would work! I look forward to reading the rest. Oh, and the inclusion of photos is perfect. I love the one of you and your brother where you are shirtless! Thanks.
Hi, Cynthia. So good to hear from you. When you're ready to start posting to your Substack, let me know and I'll recommend it. I'd love to hear more about your memoir, too.
Lovely story about hidden lives, but also the social norms of the day. I do feel sorry for Betty, to lose her fifth husband. Did she divorce the previous ones as well?
Thank you. I appreciate your comments. To tell you the truth, I know very little about Betty’s previous husbands. One was alcoholic but that’s all I know. Maybe I need to do some research!
Love the way this is unfolding. I think you've worked in more details and more of your own responses since the drafts that I read years ago. It's beautiful how this has risen to the surface again in such an insightful way.
Thank you, Anne-Marie. That means a lot coming from you. I feel like my writing has matured and I’m much more confident in it than I was ten years ago. Your insight, encouragement, and support were invaluable ingredients to that.

Don't you love it! "Oh my achin' back!" is my favorite "momism." I can hear her say that more clearly than just about anything!
My new favorite ;)

And if she married a sixth time?!
As far as I know she didn’t. She died about six years after her divorce from Dad was final.
