While not quite the burnished copper of yours, my sister had red hair, and mine has always been reddish-blond - for some reason, I too felt like it was embarrassing. Strangely, for us it was a sort of camouflage for having been adopted because our mother also had strawberry blond hair and people thought we must be her biological children.
